Rock N Roll Archaeologist, Christian Swain sits down for a spirited and in depth discussion with Joel Selvin on his latest book, 'Fare Thee Well: The Final Chapter of the Grateful Dead’s Long Strange Trip' with Pamela Turley, published by Da Capo Press.

Joel Selvin is a San Francisco Based music critic and author known for his weekly column in the San Francisco Chronicle which ran from 1972-2009. Selvin has written almost twenty books on various aspects of pop music, including the #1 New York Times bestseller, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock with Sammy Hagar. Joel has published articles in Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Billboard and Melody Maker. He has appeared in documentaries about the music scene.

“Fare Thee Well: The Final Chapter of the Grateful Dead’s Long Strange Trip” is an unvarnished chronicle of the aftermath of the Grateful Dead after Jerry Garcia’s untimely death in 1995. What happens to the Core-four (Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart) when the head hippie unexpectedly leaves the building? It’s a twenty year struggle that set sail these four men into unchartered territory of self reflection, reinvention and finally redemption. Throughout the chaos they are always lifted and healed from their self inflicted wounds by the most devoted fanbase in all of rock n roll history, the Deadheads. It certainly is a long strange trip.

Pamela Turley joins the conversation for a few minutes at the front end. Pamela Turley has been a freelance writer for fifteen years. In addition, she has owned a theater, created and produced a radio show performed in front of a live audience, and written scripts for the public service division of Atlanta’s PBS station.
